Here Come the Air Taxis

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, such as air taxis are gaining traction in the advanced air mobility (AAM) sphere.

eVTOLs are reminiscent of large, rideable drones—they take off and land perfectly vertically without taxiing off a runway like conventional aircraft do. They’re very similar to traditional helicopters in that sense, except instead of being powered by a combustion engine, eVTOLs are powered by electric motors.

These innovations in aircraft are making a lot of headway in advancing how we travel by air. Applications to everyday transport, commercial travel, urban air mobility (UAM), and military aviation are just some of the key areas where the eVTOL can be deployed.

Here Come the Air TaxisFunding for eVTOL vehicles and aircraft is speeding up, according to the Robb Report. This is supported by a study by Deloitte in 2021 estimating that the eVTOL industry is projected to reach $1-3 trillion. Investments have more than tripled the $1B investment seen at the start of the 2020s. Robb Report says that $6.9B has been invested in over 60 eVTOL deals.

What’s more, McKinsey and Company’s survey shows that consumer outlook toward eVTOLs is positive and that public transport eVTOLs are highly anticipated, especially in areas where land traffic is heavy.

Startups are mushrooming, and the sector is zooming towards certification. Exciting market dynamics, the fast-paced movement of eVTOL technology, and the rising need for an alternative, sustainable, urban transport system are factors driving the eVTOL trajectory.

Take an Air Taxi to Work

In urban settings where land traffic has reached extreme bumper-to-bumper levels, and many depend on public transport, eVTOLs can be a solution to alleviate the overflow.

Experts say that eVTOL fleets have the potential to be larger than commercial airlines, and can address land traffic challenges in megacities. These have the potential for vertiports strategically placed throughout a city where commuters can board air taxis much like we do trains and busses.

The public will be more likely to support this if there is solid infrastructure and public transport policies for eVTOL vehicles. Safety, reliability, and accessibility are primary considerations for setting the blueprint for application.

Sky congestion and air traffic will need to be supported by other electronic technology to guide eVTOL vehicles. Power storage systems for the eVTOL vehicles are also a requirement.

Air Ambulances for Emergencies and Disaster Relief

eVTOL vehicles are ideal for medical emergencies and disaster relief. Lean and compact, they can swiftly fly into previously uncharted areas where conventional transportation cannot reach.

eVTOL aircraft, for example, can reach rural areas hit by typhoons or floods to transport medical aid and relief goods. These can also serve as ambulances that can provide emergency care and quickly transport patients to the nearest hospital.

Military aviation beefed up by eVTOLs

eVTOL vehicles also have a role to play when it comes to safeguarding national security. The military can benefit from eVTOL vehicles. These are a lot quieter and stealthier than conventional helicopters. eVTOLs can quickly take off without the need for a runway and don’t have re-fueling challenges delaying quick takeoff. These make eVTOL vehicles advantageous in search and rescue operations, resupplying operations, personnel relocation, and in defense scenarios.

The U.S. military and Air Force have worked with several eVTOL companies, such as Joby Aviation, LIFT, Beta Technologies, and Elroy Air.

eVTOL Vehicles in Agriculture

Guardian Agriculture became the first eVTOL company to begin commercial operations for the sector in 2023. Their eVTOL vehicles were applied to sustainable farming practices, spraying crops in the Salinas Valley in California.

eVTOL vehicles are more sustainable alternatives to conventional aircraft sprayers as they run on electric power instead of combustion engines. Crop dusting, crop spraying, crop management, data gathering, and farm operations in general can benefit from the use of eVTOLs.

Logistics made more efficient by eVTOLs

Don’t let their size fool you. Despite its sleek shape and compact size, some eVTOL vehicles can handle substantial payloads, which makes them ideal for logistics operations. Because of their lightweight, eVTOLs are capable of meeting logistics demands and requirements.

Designed to withstand turbulence, shock, and vibration, eVTOLs can withstand tough air conditions, which makes them reliable for transport.
